STEM IN BUSINESS
UWAYE collaborated with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to host a STEM in Business Lunch. Professionals from PwC's various business areas spoke to STEM students and shed some light on the non-traditional career paths in the business industry. David Kempen, PwC’s Perth Campus Recruitment Consultant, shared ideas of what PwC looks for when recruiting and why they want STEM students, even those without any business knowledge, to join their team.
Speakers included Josh Wier and Eloise Green, who spoke on their journey from studying STEM fields at University to working in a company like PwC. This was an informative event, and it was encouraging to gain positive feedback from students on their awareness of new opportunities and careers. We’d like to thank PwC, especially David Kempen, for all their work they put into this event and the support they gave us.
STAND OUT WITH ACCENTURE
Stand Out With Accenture was an event created by the collaboration between UWAYE and Accenture. It was designed to introduce engineering students to the field of management consultant and was comprised of two components – a talk and a case study. While the talk featured representatives from Accenture who shared their career journeys of how they transitioned from engineering to consulting, the case study enabled attendees to solve a consulting challenge with the guidance of Accenture representatives. As a bonus point, the app Mentimetre was used to encourage audience participation in a new and less intimidating manner.
Overall, Stand Out With Accenture was a successful event which provided attendees with a well-rounded view into the world of management consulting, and delivered value by giving them invaluable insight which would allow them to make informed decisions about their career pathway.
RTSA CHALLENGE
In 2018 UWAYE teamed up with the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) to open the RTSA Challenge to UWA students. They hosted a speaker, Cahndra Indurthi, from the company Jacobs who spoke about the challenge and the benefits of doing it. Other members of the railway industry also came down to provide their knowledge and insight.
The RTSA Challenge is an annual event which grants Engineering students the opportunity to explore the railway industry and increase their employable skills. In groups of 3-4, students are asked to evaluate and submit the tender for a sample rail project. Winners are awarded a 12 week vocational position in the rail industry.
LUNCH & LEARN
Throughout the years we have also held lunch and learn events sponsored by Woodside. Our most recent event, Woodside Career Lunch & Learn held earlier in 2021. This event catered to engineering students of all disciplines who gained insight into careers with Woodside and information on the Graduate Development Program. Furthermore, our Lunch and Learn events have also consisted of a focus on Drilling and Completion alongside Petroleum engineering within Woodside and what these roles would entail in graduate programs. A range of representatives from Woodside who work in these positions answered questions students had in order for the next generation of engineers to gain real world insight into the future of engineering to create a brighter future.
ENGINEERING CONSULTING 2020
In 2020 we also held an Engineering Consulting event in partnership with Calibre to deliver information to students about the wonderful world of consulting through an engineering eye! This event catered to students via a case-study based approach, engaging students in how engineering skills can be showcased in utility services across multiple sectors, allowing students insight into the world of consulting and what Calibre has to offer as a company.
